Photo Travel Tips:
Recently a fellow photographer had all his photography equipment stolen from his vehicle, $20,000 +. Quite often we leave some of gear in our vehicles while out for a hike, local parks etc. just out of habit. Well opportunity strikes as your camera bag is clear view : What can we do?
1. Place you gear in the trunk of your car. It just takes a minute.
2. SUV/Trucks - out of site, out of mind - take along a cooler, suit case, duffle bag etc. and place your gear inside. Example: Personally in the summer / winter with extreme temperature ranges, I place my gear in a cooler, when going on long hikes. It also helps protects your gear from the high/cold temps.
3. I have noticed some photographers place their gear in the back of the vehicle placing clothes over top of their gear in the back of their vehicle.
4. If possible, take your equipment with you, (pack light the night before)
5. Park your vehicle in high visible areas. example - in Parks, I park as close as possible to roads/highways with a clear view.
6. Check with your insurance company on replacement cost insurance vs. standard theft. It only cost a couple hundred $ a year. Make sure you keep updated information; Serial #, photos of the gear including your serial #, receipts. I have had 1 claim in last the last 18 years and it made things a lot easier dealing with the insurance company. I know I have paid more in insurance over the years than the actual value of the claim. But is the peace of mind and the turn around time was quick.
